So what else can you do to keep fit and healthy while heeding the new advice about staying at home and self isolating? ~ Ekta Unity

There are many things you can do from your chair or sofa – for example squats, tricep dips, crunches, body work exercises and easy light Yoga exercises.

Yoga is an ancient form of exercise that focuses on strength, flexibility and breathing to boost physical and mental wellbeing. The main components of Yoga are postures (a series of movements designed to increase strength and flexibility) and breathing. Regular Yoga practice helps develop strength, balance and flexibility and it can also lift your mood.

The practice of Yoga originated in India over 5,000 years ago and has been adapted in other countries in a variety of ways. There’s some evidence that regular Yoga practice is beneficial for people with high blood pressure, heart disease, aches and pains – including lower back pain – depression and stress.

Muna Chauhan-Vice Chair/Trustee of Ekta Unity said: “Exercise ‘decreases stress and anxiety’. Everyone is stressed at the moment and people aren’t sleeping, but if you’re moving, you’re likely to sleep better. As part of Ekta Unity’s efforts of producing a series of exercise videos in various languages-English, Hindi, Punjabi & Gujarati that we have done over the last 4 months of lockdown for our service users – the following Yoga exercise video in Gujarati & English is specially prepared by experienced Yoga instructor – Rekha Thaker of Derby. The Yoga exercises in the video are ideal if you’re not very active but want to improve your health, lift your mood and remain independent. Don’t worry if you haven’t done much for a while. These light Yoga exercises are easy and gentle, and can be done indoors in the comfort of your sofa or chair”.

Thank you to Rekha Thaker for all your help and support to Ekta Unity.
